So my mom's all excited about Hillary now. She's down on Obama because, and I quote, "he has family in Kenya". She'd prefer someone a little more "american".

She doesn't look retarded.

You know, I don't totally disagree with your Mom, but I know better now. It wouldn't make me anymore interested in Hilary over Obama, but there was quite a few reports of a guy in the upper leadership of Kenya that was supposed to be Obama's Uncle. Now, is that a bad thing? Yes, I think it is. Anything that the potential president touches that relates to Kenya could have a stink of nepotism.
That said, Obama claims that he is not related to that guy, but does report that he does have some distant family ties. Other reporters have supposedly investigated and said that the relations are very distance.
Further, the issue isn't Kenya, it's relation to another gov't. If any of the current crop of nominees have an Uncle in any other gov't it would definitely influence my vote.

It's not as if he's got a prayer anyway, being black, but it is symptomatic of the racism that's still an undercurrent in this country. You just can't come right out and say race is the major factor, but you CAN imply he's got loyalties elsewhere, which is a crock of shit imo. I wonder why it's hardly ever brought up in regards to the Bush families rather close ties to the Saudis? Oh, the Bushes are WHITE which means they're more american than anyone who isn't, no matter who their friends are. It's just ignorance.

She meant he's got "close" family in another country. But I hate that "oh unless you're native american..." line, because if you go back that far you might as well go back even further and thus declare they aren't either and wind up at some water hole in Africa we're all "natives" of.
