This is actually two memes here. The first is unempathy, the unrealization that anyone else could possibly consider where they live to be "home". The second is that you should be thankful for any gift, no matter how half-hearted or bungled it is.

The question is, how do you teach people with such mindsets that they're wrong?

They're sociopaths. The compassionate thing to do is to arrange for them to be cared for individually by well-compensated professionals—by no means inflict them on each other, or the rest of us.
