This whole Dog the Bounty Hunter controversy disturbs me. Why is this even news? It was a private conversation. How in the fuck does it matter what horrible things you say in private? This is even more insane than Imus getting fired. Can we no longer say nigger in private? Oops. I mean the "n" word.
I caught a couple minutes of Dog on Larry King the other night. Really nice crocodile tears buddy. I don't watch his show, but it's pretty plain he's an unfrozen neanderthal. So ultra-right-wing GOD BLESS AMERICA KILL'EM ALL LET GOD SORT'EM OUT memes are to be expected. Still, good acting there on LK dude, seriously.
It's all probably just character assisination, but the free speech implications are scary. Just like in the Imus case, I know it's not a political issue, but it IS a cultural issue. It seems we're growing more intolerant of people saying things we don't like. Or at least more tolerant of social persecution of those people. If we're willing to let people be ostracized for their views and expression by other people, we're probably well down the road of not caring if the gov't does so as well. It's easy as hell to defend speech you agree with.

And oh, nigger. Sounds like a tasty snack. New Nabisco® Niggers! (Now in Halle Berry Caramel flavor.)

Date: 2007-11-09 08:48 pm (UTC)although i dont like that language, i certainly defend the right for people to use it when they so feel the need, especially in private.

Date: 2007-11-09 09:34 pm (UTC)Why don't we ever react this way when someone calls a woman a "fat cow" or a bitch? Or, when mentally challenged people are called retarded or stupid? Or, overweight people who are called names,
and on, and on, and on...

Date: 2007-11-09 10:34 pm (UTC)Besides, I'm mentally challenged when I do lots of things. It doesn't mean I'm stupid, it means I'm stretching my boundries.

Date: 2007-11-10 03:00 pm (UTC)Seriously, I see your point. Although, I'm not convinced that the term "mentally challenged" is an attempt at mind control. I think it's more an attempt at sounding less harsh than retarded. Yet, then again, I've sort of negated my entire point by using that phrase. So, going back to the original point of my post - I agree with you that too much time is being spent on what one man has said in a private conversation.
