I don't see why your political view should interfere with your regular lifestyle (like who you befriend). I think that's been the point of the USA for the past few decades anyway, proving that we really are a melting pot and nothing (race, gender, religion, etc) should matter, although for a lot of ignorant people, it does. But I think as far as political figures are concerned, if they want the votes and the good publicity, their judgement can't be clouded by stupidity like that (what's with Bush's son....).
