WTF #9,841
Nov. 9th, 2007 01:22 pmThis whole Dog the Bounty Hunter controversy disturbs me. Why is this even news? It was a private conversation. How in the fuck does it matter what horrible things you say in private? This is even more insane than Imus getting fired. Can we no longer say nigger in private? Oops. I mean the "n" word.
I caught a couple minutes of Dog on Larry King the other night. Really nice crocodile tears buddy. I don't watch his show, but it's pretty plain he's an unfrozen neanderthal. So ultra-right-wing GOD BLESS AMERICA KILL'EM ALL LET GOD SORT'EM OUT memes are to be expected. Still, good acting there on LK dude, seriously.
It's all probably just character assisination, but the free speech implications are scary. Just like in the Imus case, I know it's not a political issue, but it IS a cultural issue. It seems we're growing more intolerant of people saying things we don't like. Or at least more tolerant of social persecution of those people. If we're willing to let people be ostracized for their views and expression by other people, we're probably well down the road of not caring if the gov't does so as well. It's easy as hell to defend speech you agree with.
"But isn't offensive and unpopular speech exactly the kind that needs protecting?"--George Carlin
And oh, nigger. Sounds like a tasty snack. New Nabisco® Niggers! (Now in Halle Berry Caramel flavor.)
