For those following this, the reason for the "Two Shuttles Passing in
the Night" is that there were only two High Bays available then, but
NASA had three Shuttle stacks to juggle... STS-35, STS-38, and STS-41.
35 and 38 were the victims of the Hydrogen Leak Fiasco that delayed
launches throughout the middle of 1990, while 41 was the Ulysses
launch facing a short October launch window. NASA didn't want to
disrupt 41's stacking flow, and when 38 had to go back to the VAB for
repairs after yet another round of Hydrogen Leaks, they parked it
outside the VAB overnight, while 35 went back out to the pad, having
already been de-leaked. Then they moved 38 into the High Bay 35 had
just vacated (but not before 38 got rained on out in the open.) Later,
a Tropical Storm caused yet another rollback for 35, and 41 ended up
launching first of the three.
