More Linux Fun #21

All I wanted to do was compile the latest beta of Gaim. Damn, no ssl libraries.

Hey, this is CentOS! It's like RedHat! I'll give the RPM a shot! Damn, it wants pspell. Ok, find rpm for pspell. Gosh, that was easy. Well shit, pspell wants aspell. Find rpm for aspell. Not that hard. Ok. Well shit sherriff, aspell tells me a later version is installed![1]

Ok. I'm betting the problem is, knowing DeadRat, the dev headers aren't installed. By this point, I could give two shits and reboot into Windows.

Edit: Of course none of the devel stuff was installed. Finding that necessitated a trip to the install cd, and the website for updated RPMs (that wouldn't have been installed even if I had decided to throw in the kitchen sink [livejournal.com profile] pdx6... :-P). Still no joy, until I dug through config.log and noticed "libgcrypt not found".

I'm gonna go have a stroke now.

[1] Most of my dealings with RPMs end this way.

"Doctor, it hurts when I do that!" "So don't do that, then."

Don't do what? Install linux? Yeah, I'm gettin' that feeling too.

[identity profile] rbarclay.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm talking about that RPM crap.

[identity profile] loosechanj.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's another thing that sucks about the Linux world, the plethora of package systems.

[identity profile] rbarclay.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There're only two that actually work - Debian and Gentoo. Everything RPM-based is just asking to be replaced.

[identity profile] loosechanj.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about Gentoo, but it seems to be heavily influenced by *BSD. I definately agree about RPM, but DeadRat is what you most often encounter in situations where people pay you to give a shit about Linux, so that's the skillset I'm going for. Otherwise I'd just as soon worry about something sane, like Open or FreeBSD.

[identity profile] pdx6.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude. Use yum or apt repo systems. Manually installing RPMs generally isn't done these days.

[identity profile] loosechanj.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yum? Apt repo...is that the debian stuff? And none of that really tells me how to get gaim to recognize that I've got NSS or whatever the hell it needs for msn to work is actually there. Which I'm not convinced it is. Most likely the dev headers aren't, which is about what I'd expect from RH/CentOS. I'd rather NOT use RPMs, I'd like to compile from source. But RH really seems to go out of their way to make it hard for you to do that.

You should always do a full install when using Redhat, Fedora, or CentOS on your desktop. Yum will assist you greatly in installing 3rd party packages. Apt also will.

Quit yer bitch'n. Live an learn how to use your freaking OS.

He's posessed by daemons.

[identity profile] pdx6.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Or he's just lazy. I vote for my idea.

[identity profile] shamus9999.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but I'd still like to see his head spin around. I'll pass on the pea soup though.

I did. :-P

[identity profile] pdx6.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If it doesn't have all the -devel libraries, it isn't a full install. Doode.

[identity profile] loosechanj.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I fail to see how installing mysql would magically make the NSS includes appear.

There's a slogan.

"Please use another piece of software to manage the packages made available in our package management system."

Bitches need to die and lie in the gutter till they rot.
